Set in 1960s Quebec, Les Belles-Soeurs weaves together the stories of 15 women, as they gather in their friend's home to help her paste a million stamps into booklets. As they get increasingly more jealous of their friend's win, they start to secretly steal her booklets, leaving her with nothing in the end.
Within the story is an exploration of the economy of envy. As Germaine is getting increasingly in love with her newly won prizes, she doesn't notice that her possessions are fake and useless replicas, and her real estate is not that real at all.
